This paper analyzes the Portevin-Le Chatelier (PLC) effect in alloy 5083 under different conditions, including soft annealed, cold rolled, low-temperature recovered, and pre-deformed states during tensile testing. The PLC effect varies in intensity and manifests as plastic flow instabilities of types A and B, depending on the alloy's state. In all cases, critical strains occur at the onset of plastic flow. The stress drop amplitude and reloading time increase with increasing tensile strain. Not under any condition does the PLC effect lead to premature ductility loss, as the onset of necking during tensile testing corresponds relatively well to Considère's criterion for homogeneous deformation.
